Workshops for Our Girls

In our work with children through our Scholarship Fund and the Holy Cross School, we find that education extends beyond just the classroom. And so, to help our children become the best people as well as students they can be, we host other forums for them to learn not only about maths, science, literature and so on, but about themselves as well. Two of these forums have been workshops for several of the girls we sponsor as well as other girls with whom we have contact. The workshops were facilitated by Child Care Workers from the Isibindi Projects in Alice in the Eastern Cape. The most recent follow-up workshop was hosted here in late June.

The girls came to the monastery for a few days to talk and learn about what it means to grow up as a girl in South Africa. It was a time just for the girls to interact with women role models. The stories were not always easy to tell or to hear, but time and space was given for significant healing as they strengthened and comforted each other. We, the monastic community, are delighted to provide a safe space for such intimacy and nurturing to happen. It seems to us that the monastery is an ideal place for it.
