Saying Goodbye and Looking Forward to Saying Hello
We can hardly believe that a year has already passed since our Young Adult Service Corps (YASC) volunteer, Travis Shields, first got off the plane not knowing who he would meet to pick him up at the Port Elizabeth Airport and then wasted no time in getting started with his work with the children. Travis has now gone back to Texas in the United States and he is greatly missed, especially by the children in the Holy Cross School. He was such an instrumental part of their growth and nurturing. We are so grateful that they were able to experience his great care, compassion and considerable energy for their learning. Travis is applying for medical school in Texas. So he will be very busy and engaged in his studies, but he hopes to return to South Africa very soon and maybe to put his medical skills to good use here. We look forward to that possibility. Please pray for him in whatever he endeavours to do. Fortunately, we are not without a volunteer for long. In early August, our new YASC volunteer will be arriving. Steven Smith is from California and we are eager for his arrival. Again, the Young Adult Service Corps of the Episcopal Church of the United States has come through for us and we are so grateful for their generous support of our ministry of giving children the best education they can have. We are also so delighted that our children are getting the opportunity to be with an adult from another country. It is part of our plan to give our children a different kind of education where they are mentored by people of mixed races, mixed nationalities, and younger and older. We feel it is what God would want for our children and for all of us. |
